Many of you have read or heard by now the bed bug problems the University of Nebraska is having. The school made headlines because of their poor handling of the situation which now has students and parents in a panic. The school got off to a bad start by not communicating the proper steps students could take to protect themselves. It seems the school has redeemed themselves and has instituted an all-out assault on the freeloading bed bugs.
What I find even more interesting is the fact that several of the fraternities on campus are now exploring the option of purchasing bed bug insurance. According to the article, Willis Global Insurance has a bed bug policy that would protect the fraternity in case if an infestation. Knowing that it could cost the fraternity tens of thousands of dollars to treat a frat wide infestation, spending $2,000 on a policy is a really good investment.
I wrote about bed bug insurance in the past and I actually reached out to some insurers. However, I never received any answers to my questions. I think insurance is a good idea, but like most things, the devil is in the details and I think we will see policies evolve as insurers become more familiar with the type of damage bed bugs can cause. So if you are a hotel or apartment owner, be sure to read the fine print before signing up for any insurance.
